Column van de "eerlijke" recensie: Recensies van de hele serie van A Court of Thorns and Roses RECENSIE

Ali schrijft grappige Engelse recensies over voornamelijk fantasy en feelgood boeken. Klik HIER om meer van haar te lezen.

Ali: My favorite genre is historical romance but I’m starting to fall in love with fantasy. When I’m not reading I’m baking, watching terrible reality TV, or wishing I was reading. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota with my partner, a lovely man who tolerates my book hoarding with admirable grace.

Recensie A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) | 3,5 hartjes

An illiterate 19 year old straight up kills a guy and is outraged when there are consequences. Her punishment is living in a mansion with a hot mayor and hanging out with his friend, the nicest guy in the world and the only character I care about in this series. This is a tragic turn of events for Feyre, as it separates her from her life as an indentured servant to her shitty family. Who’s going to take care of her deadbeat dad, her personality-proof younger sister, and Nesta, Satan’s apprentice? One day a generically handsome man appears and all of BookTok developed a bat fetish overnight. Some stuff happens as Feyre ends up in the Tri-Wizard Tournament from hell where she has to outsmart a worm. Feyre struggles but eventually triumphs due to severe interference from outside sources. This goes on for five books. The fanbase for this series is the size of a large-ish army and if you say something negative about Cassian, they will hunt you down and ruin your life. And honestly, good for them.

*spoiler alert* Feyre has safely returned from Under the Mountain and suffers no ill effects aside from nightmares, violent gastrointestinal distress, anemia, and losing the will to live. Her fiancé has turned into a massive dick because the Spring Court may have many positive attributes but it does not have comprehensive trauma counseling. At her wedding, Rhysand swoops in (literally 🦇), takes her to his condo, and gets her Hooked on Phonics. We meet Cassian, who is serving Big Wing Energy, and Azriel, a spymaster who can’t suss out that the woman he’s been in love with for 500 years isn’t into men. We discover that Rhys is really good at keeping secrets from Feyre, particularly when they pertain to her (better call in Az because that’s some FORESHADOWING) and she eventually forgives him by heating up a can of Dinty Moore. They have sex in a vat of Bob Ross paint (happy little bushes indeed). The most important character in this book is the Suriel, a sassy soothsaying slayer in Voldemort robes. Lucien continues to be perfect. Tamlin is pissed. BookTok loses its collective mind.

Recensie A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) | 4 hartjes

*spoiler alert* Feyre, being mated ‘n’ sated, returns to the Spring Court as a spy even though they literally have a guy for that already. Elain, already in a character deficit, withdraws even further into herself and now has the personality of the color beige. That’s not a problem for Nesta, who occupies her time with being an asshole to everyone. We learn that Feyre is unreceptive to constructive criticism, as she is given some completely valid feedback and responds by setting Lucien’s mom on fire. Mor, who is at the very least gay-leaning, stubbornly refuses to stop sleeping with men in front of the guy who’s in love with her because she is apparently a sadist. Tamlin throws a temper tantrum that is visually stunning. Ships! Necks! Death-camp sex! The cover is a violent magenta rarely seen in nature outside of certain types of exotic birds.

Recensie A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #4) | 4 hartjes

All Feyre wants for not-Christmas is for everyone to get along, which is not possible as her sisters are the worst. Her gift to us is a two-page-long vivid description of fae periods. Elain timidly shows the beginnings of a personality developing. Unfortunately it mostly consists of being mean to Lucien so I’m officially done with her. Fuck you, Elain. Not to be outdone, Nesta is rude as hell to Cassian, the only person who doesn’t actively wish she was dead. Feyre gives Rhys the gift of trying of get her pregnant and we are voyeurs to some sort of… brain sex? The words “sucking on my ice” are used and it bummed me out.

Recensie A Court of Silver Flames (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #5) | 4 hartjes

*spoiler alert* Nesta, the most unlikeable person in literature, is understandably upset about being turned fae against her will. The lightning rods of her ire include her family and a magical bathtub. When her brother in law finally puts his foot down and sticks her in the Tower of Sauron, she pouts until a 500 year old man with bat wings yells at her. Nesta decides to retaliate by learning how to use stairs. She and the very old but hot winged man proceed to have PornHub sex in every room of the tower, which is also sentient and is 100% watching them all the time. How Nesta’s cervix survived the sex described is a mystery. She eventually stops being a huge bitch all the time (in too much cervical pain?) and saves her sister from a death her brother in law knew was going to happen and did nothing to prevent. Also there’s a hike that almost kills her. And a Death Swamp. Maybe lesbians? And Eris, who is my toxic trait.
