Recensie: Fourth Wing - Rebecca Yarros | 4 hartjes
** spoiler alert ** Part One: Chapters 1 - 20
A young woman wants to be a professional nerd but her mom insists she almost die via dragon instead. Her sister prepares her for spring orientation by warning her there is one man she must never, ever speak to, thus revealing the love interest within the first fifteen pages. Violet hates Xaden on principle but he has an eyebrow scar so what can you do? One might question how the son of an executed rebel is running a wing of the army, and one would be told to shut up and enjoy the book. Violet’s hot friend keeps trying to undermine her, making him less hot. We are info-dumped via Violet talking out loud to calm herself down in what can be called Clunky Exposition. Violet survives school, unlike many of her classmates who die at an alarming rate by various means, including their professors. She then bonds with not one but two dragons, one of whom is the size of the Chrysler building and one that is useless. Violet is convinced Xaden wants to kill her despite him having multiple opportunities that he never takes, indicating that she would make a terrible detective.
Part Two: Chapters 21 - 39
The dragons fuck and it makes their riders horny. I tried to think of a different way of putting it and I can’t find one. Dain, aka Jacob from Twilight, mopes and pouts like a pro. When people (and dragons) aren’t scoffing or chuffing, they’re growling or using terms like “so freaking hot”, an odd choice for a fantasy setting where quills are used. Violet may not be great at a lot, but she’s a champ at flicking her wrist and does so multiple times per chapter; she also causes thunderstorms when she climaxes, which is bad for privacy but good for crops. The useless dragon turns out to be a toddler who has to Baby Bjorn herself to her adopted dad because she’s too little to fly far. Sentences. Are. Emphasized. Like. This. Pretty much everyone betrays Violet and her reaction is better than mine, which would have been lightning-deathing everyone around me. The ending is a cliffhanger that will make you say “oh actually fuck off” out loud (in my experience). Think your mom is bad? Because yikes.

Omschrijving:
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die
